The costumes
Every costume in our tarantella sorrentina show (the traditional folk dance of Sorrento) is sewn by hand using time-honoured techniques: lace, little bells, flounces, sashes and jewellery. As they stitched them, the seamstresses of Sorrento relived the festivals where they danced the tarantella as little girls.
The skirtthat twirls
The skirt is the heart of the women's costume: pleated velvet in a single colour with three gold bands along the hem. When the dancer spins, the flounces open out like a tambourine.
- White short-sleeved blouse with ruffles and embroidered lace
- Colourful low-cut velvet waistcoat, laced at the front and trimmed with gold bands
- Multicoloured sash at the waist, tied at the back with a large bow
- White lace apron
- Pleated velvet skirt with three gold bands along the hem
- White wool stockings and black ballet flats with a little red rose
Piece by piece
Alongside the couples of dancers, two traditional Neapolitan masked characters also take part in the show.
The men's costume
- Red wool cap with a black band and a pointed tip
- Multicoloured neckerchief tied sailor-style
- Waistcoat, often in two colours, with gold buttons
- Multicoloured sash wrapped around the waist and knotted on the left hip
- "Fisherman-style" trousers with a side slit
- White wool stockings and black shoes with a little red rose
The women's costume
- White blouse with ruffles and lace
- Velvet waistcoat with gold bands
- Sash at the waist with a large bow
- White lace apron
- Pleated velvet skirt with three gold bands
- White lace-trimmed bloomers, wool stockings, black ballet flats
The Pazzariello
- White long-sleeved shirt
- Black velvet jacket with gold and red ribbons
- Multicoloured sash at the waist with a matching neckerchief
- Black knee-length velvet breeches
- Large hat with colourful feathers
- White wool stockings and black shoes with a little red rose
Pulcinella
- White outfit with puffed sleeves
- Small white hat
- Black half-mask with the big nose
- Red cord at the waist
